How Does a Photovoltaic System Work?

If you’ve been researching solar panel systems, you have likely come across the term “photovoltaic.” While this terminology may seem intimidating at first, it is simply a way to describe how these solar panel systems create energy — through the photovoltaic effect.

In today’s blog post from Solar Bright, we are going to discuss how photovoltaic systems work in three easy steps. Creating electricity from the sun’s rays is a relatively simple concept, and when this energy is harnessed correctly, a system of solar panels on your roof can create enough energy to power your home for decades to come.

#1 Photons Are Converted Into Electricity

Photovoltaic systems work by collecting photons, or light particles, from the sun’s rays and converting them into electricity. Some materials, such as the semiconductors that are used in photovoltaic solar systems, release electrons when they are exposed to light, and when these electrons are captured, they result in an electric current. This is called the photoelectric effect, also known as the photovoltaic effect. While this effect was discovered as far back as the 19th century, it wasn’t until recently that we learned how to utilize it as a viable energy source.

#2 Direct Current Is Converted to Alternating Current

The electricity created from the photoelectric effect is in the form of direct current (DC). Photovoltaic systems are equipped with an inverter that converts the DC into alternating current (AC), which is what is used to power our homes.

#3 The AC Electricity Is Used to Power Your Home

Once the electricity is converted into AC power, it can be used in one of two ways. The electricity can be used to power your home, or, it can be sent to the power grid to be stored and sold by the utility company, who will typically pay you for the electricity and deduct the price from your utility bill.
